BIOGRAPHY
PARK Chan-ho has explored the meaning of death. He has documented cultures related to the unique ancestral rites of South Korea for a long time.
His “Private Concern” about death has begun in his childhood with his mother’s death, and it naturally has become “Public Concern” of human beings. He tried to approach the essential question of ‘Death and Return’ through a visual study. He also continues to study and photograph Korean traditional beliefs (shamanism), Korean myths, and Korean Buddhism, and is devoted to finding the existence of God and the fundamental truth of human.
is photography work was exhibited in Singapore, China, Hungary, Poland, Kazakhstan, and rgentina, as well as in Korea, and became known in North America through a 2018 New York Times article ‘Fearing Death, and Photographing the Rituals That Surround It’.
In 2019, he was selected as the artist of the year for his "SHRINE" photography work to find the original form of Korean mythology at the FNK PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD jointly organized by the Geum-boseng Art Center.
Park Chan-ho is a Korean photographer, researcher of Korean traditional beliefs (shamanism), organizer, and head of KADU, a Korean artist organization that supports diaspora and adoptees. He is also a member of photography specialist at Naver's Knowledge Encyclopedia, Korea's leading search platform
한국의 죽음에 관한 의미를 탐구해온 사진가 박찬호 (1971-)는
한국의 고유한 문화 중 제의와 관련된 문화를 오랜 시간 동안
사진으로 기록해 왔다.
소년 시절 어머니의 죽음에서부터 시작된 죽음이라는 그의
“사적고민”은 인간의 근원적인 ”공적고민”이 되어 작업의 동력이
되었다.
죽음과 돌아감이라는 인간의 본질적인 질문에 침잠하는 그는 시각적 탐구를 통해 그 본질에 다가가려 했다. 그는 또한 한국의 전통신앙(샤머니즘), 한국의 신화, 그리고 한국불교에 관한 연구 및 사진작업을 지속하고 있으며 이를 통해 신의 존재와 인간의 근원적 진리를 시각적으로 맞딱뜨리기 위해 몰두하고 있다.
그의 사진작업은 한국믈 비롯하여 싱가포르, 중국, 헝가리, 폴란드,
카자흐스탄, 아르헨티나 등에서 전시되었으며
2018년 New york Times의 기사 Fearing Death, and Photographing the Rituals That Surround It 를 통해서 북미에도 알려지게 되었다. 2019년 금보성 아트센터에서 공동으로 주관하는 FNK PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD에서 한국 신화의 원형을 찾아가는 ‘신당’ 작업으로 올해의
작가로 선정되었다.
박찬호는 한국의 사진예술가이자 한국전통신앙 (샤머니즘) 연구자이며 기획자이며. 디아스포라와 입양인을 지원하는 한국 예술인 단체인 KADU의 대표이다. 또한 한국의 대표적인 검색 플랫폼인 네이버 지식백과사전의 사진전문위원이기도 하다.
